Bits I Loved

  • The premise is a great take on the romantic comedy genre. Pastiche and parody films have always been around, but there has not been a large amount of intelligent rom-com parodies. What this film does is give us a premise similar to how Naked Gun parodies detective films.
  • The characters are very entertaining, given that they are nothing more than ways to mock characters made famous by Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.
  • The script is incredibly intelligent filled with dry humour that makes you wonder “How did this manage to be put in here?”

Bits I Hated

  • The story feels a bit messy at times, trying to incorporate every cliche for rom-coms possible and thus causing strain on the narrative.
  • The misuse of the cast, particularly Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper. So many people with comedic talent are wasted in this film, but again that is partially a parody of rom-coms in itself.

Review

They Came Together is a delightfully smart romantic comedy filled with absurdity and incredibly dry humour. The story is unsure whether it is a parody or pastiche film, and at some times it is a bit messy. Just remember that this film is meant to be a parody of films like You’ve Got Mail, nothing more. The supporting cast is not used to their potential, particularly Bill Hader and Ellie Kemper, but the chemistry of Paul Rudd and Amy Poelher bring this cliched film literally to higher levels of entertainment. Definitely a very intelligent and enjoyable comedy.
